Retirement doesn’t have to mean sitting back in a rocking chair and relaxing all day. Of course, it can, if that’s what you’d like. Your retirement should be whatever you want it to be. If you enjoy relaxing, taking it easy, and hitting up a beach every so often, that’s how you should spend your retirement.

However, different people like different things. For some, retirement adventure sports are where it’s at.

What does this mean? Think sports like scuba diving, rock climbing, snowboarding, or even skydiving! Quiet afternoons of puzzles and knitting can certainly be fun, but today’s retirees are participating in so many activities that would have been considered unheard of just a short time ago.

There’s also a growing trend among retirees to learn new things and live new lives and embrace new ideas in retirement. These days, leaving the workforce isn’t so much about “slowing down” as much as it is “trying new things.”

If you live in an area with waves, why not try surfing? It can be a very fun activity and one that most people can learn with some training. You’ll find surfing instructors available near most surfing beaches. If you don’t live near a beach, you might want to consider traveling if surfing is something you’d enjoy.

Skiing or Snowboarding

Downhill skiing or snowboarding are a similar situation. Some people will live close to mountains or ski hills, and this can be a great activity for them. Otherwise, you can travel if you’d like and make a vacation of it. 

Rock Climbing

There are various levels of rock climbing, from indoor courses to climbing up actual cliffs or mountains. Start where you feel comfortable and work your way up from there.

Whitewater Rafting

There’s nothing like the thrill of racing through rapids. Again, if you live in an area where you can do this locally, go for it, but it’s also a great vacation.

Scuba Diving

Much like with rock climbing, there are different levels of scuba diving depending on what you’re comfortable with and what you enjoy. It’s a low-impact activity that also opens up many travel opportunities. 

Marathon Running

Did you know that the oldest person to complete a full marathon was 100 years old? It’s not too late for you to start! You can begin with shorter runs and gradually build up your training. When done safely, preparing for a marathon can be a very worthwhile achievement. 

Skydiving

Ready to go all out and have what many consider to be the ultimate adventure? Why not go skydiving! There are plenty of places that will train you safely.

What to Know Before You Get Started

Of course, with any activity there are a few things you’ll want to keep in mind. This is especially true if you’re taking part in an adventure sport. First of all, know that there is some level of physically fitness involved with many sports. The requirements often aren’t intimidating, but they exist, so be aware of what they are. Once you know them, it’s up to you to decide if you want to do the training needed. 

Know that having certain medical conditions can make it more challenging or even potentially exclude you from doing certain activities.

Also, be aware that your insurance may not cover the more extreme sports. Check with your insurance company before you do anything out of the ordinary. 

Remember that maintaining an active lifestyle is important for your physical and mental health. Regular exercise helps with more than just physical fitness. It also improves cognitive clarity, helps alleviate stress, and gives you opportunities to socialize.
